18th May, 2008. 8:14 am. Electricity Question

House Husband isn't home and doesn't know much about electricity, anyway, so I'll post this and see if anyone else does.

My lovely Cuisinart is no more and seems to have taken two outlets along with it.  The lights that are also on that circuit breaker work just fine.  And no amount of flipping the circuit breaker appears to have reawakened the outlets.

After reading online, it appears that this could mean that I have either loose/bad wires or an overall bad outlet.  So I need to call an electrician.  (Because I know I'm not going to touch it!)

However, what I can't seem to find out is whether or not this is a fire hazard?  Should I keep the circuit breaker off until I can get someone out?  Or can I still use the lights and just live with the annoyance of dead outlets?

C'mon, smart friends.  Let me know.  :)

18th May, 2008. 12:23 am. New costume!

Didn't happen.  No one should be surprised by this one.  I'm actually kinda surprised that I got as far as I did.  The plans were to go camera shopping and that took much longer than expected, when doesn't it.  (We found a good camera but the only place that had it was sold out so we have to order online - no new camera for the RenFest.)  Then we had to stop by work - stupid new machine refuses to work properly.  Fabric shopping took a bit longer than it should have because they charged me the wrong amount.  All this (and other stuff) added up to putting me over four hours behind the hoped for schedule.  Didn't stop me from trying, a rather half-hearted attempt but still it was an attempt.

Rhynn actually draped the bodice for me - sorta draped.  It was a half patterned/half draped thing.  I cut it out in approximately the right shape and then he pinned it to shape.  It seems to be looking pretty good and I have the coutil cut out.  Yup, that's as far as I got.  Well, the fabric is all located and ready to go so that's something.

And finally, we went to a Jonathan Coulton concert.  Other than it being really crowded and extremely hot (seriously HOT), it was awesome!  Okay, the guys that were behind us during Paul and Storm and in front of us for Jonathan Coulton were huge jerks.  And yes, that is an edit.  The first word that comes to mind is not 'jerk' but something else.  They were talking before saying how much of a 'jerk' move it would be for them to stand in front of people because they're so tall and then they stand in front of us.  Okay, so you announce that it wouldn't be nice and then do it.  Hmmm...  And they were bobbing and weaving and I had to do some serious dodging to avoid getting elbowed in the chest area.  But I got to hear I Feel Fantastic live so I'm happy.  =)

And now, rather than staying up all night to finish the new costume, I'm going to take a long shower and then go to bed.  Wow, sleep before a RenFest.  I must be learning something.  Not enough to not even start the new project apparently but at least it's not don't get any sleep and still not get it done.

Current mood: need shower....

I only ask because every time she screamed I almost longed for Jar-Jar.

It's okay. I get The Last Crusade now. All will be well.

17th May, 2008. 8:47 pm. Motor City Comic Con not as fun as it was when we were 17

Shocking (not really:) Motor City Comic Con is kind of sad. Now, granted, I'm old and jaded now, but even sleepy little GenCon is bustling compared to this thing.

The Good(ish): A lot of 501st/Rebel Legion people. At least, a lot more than I was expecting. I didn't go up and talk to anyone, because I don't actually know any of them and I'm shy like that. But hey, they were there, and had a bunch of stuff set up.

The Bad: Programming? Who needs programing? The program book had like 5 pages, and big margins. I wasn't expecting much, but still. I guess that kind of thing is what PenguinCon and ConFusion are for.

The Ugly: Rain. Seriously, we parked just as it started pouring. POURING. And I wore my tall jeans with my not-so-tall shoes. Bad move...

So yeah, it's not the 90's, when the publishers would show up (I remember checking out a B&W proof of one of the final issues of Sandman at the Vertigo booth, and also we were going to heckle Rob Liefeld at Image, but of course we didn't) and we got actual goodie bags and [info]princesschan would spent her stepfather's money on Sailor Moon bootlegs. Oh well.

But I did finally get to see [info]armaphine's new place, and it is bitching. A++ would nap again.

That above reference makes me nearly a thousand years old. (But I only look half that!) The heat has hit Southern California, but thanks to this new little philosophy called "thinking ahead" we have a portable air conditioner. Which is...

17th May, 2008. 11:25 am. Indy Mania III

It's Indy-A-Go-Go on television for you couch potatoes this weekend!

FoxNews's Hannity's America, which airs 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, will feature a report on the real crystal skulls (yes, there really is such a thing). I could've sworn I saw an ad on Travel for another special about the real-life crystal skulls that's supposed to air 9 p.m. on Sunday but I'm unable to find it on Travel's website.

Then there is History's new special Indiana Jones and the Ultimate Quest airing Sunday night at 8 p.m. (check History.com for the schedule in your time zone).

Biography is running specials on Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and Shia LeBeouf??? How long is Shia's show going to last, fifteen minutes? Let's see, Disturbia, Transformers, Indy, Walgreens, the end :P.

There's more here listed:

Hope you have a fabulous day!

To celebrate, I did my first handstand in yoga class. OK, so it wasn't really for that, but I'm pretty happy anyway.

17th May, 2008. 11:13 am. Cool!

Thanks to Joe Lidster for pointing this out to me.  Why can't we do anything this silly in America?  Oh, I know, we're too concerned with screen time and what do I get out of it, rather than the cause.

Current mood: amused.

17th May, 2008. 6:54 am. Dufus and mass bird suicide...

Our last barn cat, Calico, has been MIA for almost two months now. She was last sighted in late March, and we think she was spooked off the ranch by coyotes, even though she was a Tough Cat.

We waited for another barn cat to materialize, but no joy. Our neighbors down the street had some weaned kittens, so I went down on Monday and chose the male of the two remaining cats. He was very friendly, in that "let me nuzzle you and then climb under the gas pedal while you're driving" way, and was named "Dufus" on the two mile drive home. We put him in the barn, and he seems mostly okay in his new environment, but he is clearly a sociable little guy, so it may be hard on him being a solitary barn cat. He has attempted to make friends with the dogs, walking right up to the edge of the corral, somewhat to our dismay. We would be happy if the dogs didn't go berserk every time they spot him, but we also don't want him walking up to any random canine without fear, as that is a good way to become a coyote meal.

And yesterday Jeff took him a "sacrifice" of seven dead baby birds. Da Boy and I came home from school and errands to find seven baby chick corpses strewn all over the ground in the carport. We can't figure out what happened, and it was gross and distressing. Jeff moved the corpses over close to the barn door, both to get them away from the house and the area of dog interest, and also to encourage Dufus to get the idea that food can come from the wild. We just hope that he doesn't end up in a confrontation with a big barn rat before he is actually larger than one...
