for star wars fans

G4 is going to be broadcasting Friday's "Star Wars Spectacular" panel live from Comic-Con, and the hosts of the panel will be the hosts from G4's "Attack of the Show" (Kevin Pereira, Olivia Munn, and comics expert Blair Butler).

Part of the presentation will be a videos of Star Wars fan stories, and Star Wars fans asking questions about "The Clone Wars" series to the creators (including George Lucas, who may be taping some responses to the questions).

My inside informant asked me to get the word out on getting Star Wars fans to submit videos that may end up part of the presentation (and maybe even get a response from George Lucas).

Here is the link:
http://upload.g4tv.com/upload/starwars_comiccon09.aspx
Here are some of the key things to remember:
* Videos must be no longer than 90 seconds, and no more than 150 MB
* Must be shot against a white background.
* don't use copyrighted snippets or music.
* no trademarks, logos, etc. - I asked about Star Wars costumes and SW logos and SW fan group logos, and these will probably be ok.

Deadline is the end of next week (July 10).

--
Now I have a med-res Flip video recorder and some white walls, so if someone wants to record a video of their fan story or their Clone Wars question, I can help with the video. I'd really love to see friends get their 90 seconds of Star Wars fame!

recent reading.

so this past week i've finished a couple books:

Death's Daughter by Amber Benson.
Check it out at Mysterious Galaxy.

I had picked this up back at ConDor, and had Amber sign it for me, but hadn't gotten around to reading it until last week. It's an enjoyable fantasy adventure, about a 20-something gal, Calliope Reaper-Jones, who is trying the New York lifestyle as an exec assistant in a magazine publisher, until she gets word that her father's been kidnapped and she needs to take over the family business.... which happens to be Death. trying to stop her are the very hunky Devil's protege and some other forces of darkness, and to prove she can do the job, she needs to do three tasks... an enjoyable adventure filled with wit.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: No Prisoners by Karen Traviss.
Check it out at Mysterious Galaxy.

This came out in May, but somehow slipped under my radar until i saw it at MG this past week. As a tie-in to the ongoing The Clone Wars animated series, No Prisoners is in an odd place - an adult series tied into a cartoon mostly geared towards kids. But Karen Traviss doesn't disappoint as she builds up a storyline in the Clone Wars. While Anakin's taking a break, his clone commander Rex and his padawan Ahsoka are assigned to a recently refit ship, commanded by a young Gil Pellaeon, for its shakedown. However, a Republic intel operative has been assigned to infiltrate the anti-government forces on a dictator-run planet that is a Republic ally.. and ends up caught in a revolution, backed by the separatists... and is captured. And she's Pellaeon's secret girlfriend. with an untested ship with only one squad of clones and no other republic forces in the area, rescuing her is going to be tough, but Rex and Ahsoka have unlikely allies: a ship of dissident Jedi who believe in attachment, including Callista. Can Ahsoka put aside her distrust for these unorthodox Jedi to help spring the agent? Can Pellaeon really put an entire ship at risk for one person? Can Anakin, showing up to the party late, get confide in a Jedi master who thinks marriage is ok? Can a spy believe in her mission to help prop up a dissent-crushing dictator? The story looks at the concept of attachment from different angles, while having some good ground and space battles.

multi-media extravaganza.

so this week, i've been busy reading books and comics, watching some tv and movies. and i got a haircut.

tuesday night, we rented "Quantum of Solace" - and while we had seen "Casino Royale" somewhat recently, the events in it that QoS referenced weren't quite fresh in our minds, so on wednesday, i rewatched Casino Royale (yay for free movies on demand), and then watched Quantum of Solace again.

Heroes - Claire-free episode means that there's less teen angst lameness.
Scrubs - kinda meh. are we supposed to want more of the new interns?
Lost - something happened! i want a tan jumpsuit.
The Office - Michael crawls around. Pam installs a copier.
30 Rock - wow, i want to see the world like Kenneth does.
whitney started watching the first part of "Lost in Austen" in which a modern English girl swaps places with Lizzie Bennet and ends up complicating the plot of Pride and Prejudice.

the final issue of "Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods" finally came out after much delay (and new artists). i felt a little letdown by the ending. that's it? the tomb of the gods is just a hole behind a door? no denouement? the previous issues were way better than the ending. why?

picked up Aaron Allston's "Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Outcast" and am halfway through it. Luke gets exiled, and the Jedi Order is on the government's bad side. Meanwhile, Han and Leia go to Kessel.

and i made Elite status on Yelp.

and what am i going to do tonight, without BSG or TCW?

My review of the season finale of The Clone Wars: "Hostage Crisis" has been posted. From the comments, not everyone was as giddy about it as I was.

post-ConDor

so ConDor, one of san diego's small sci-fi/fantasy conventions was this past weekend, and it was a fun and busy time. i was scheduled to be on one panel each day, and also had the Greatest ConDorian Hero clue solving challenge to manage with Dan on saturday. and the San Diego Fan Force table (which was shared with Rebel Legion), and didn't really need much staffing.

Friday: Urban Fantasy, Amber Benson )
Saturday: Greatest ConDorian Hero, Star Wars - then Cooking Club )

Sunday: BSG, sitting around )

got home, went to church, then got home and had [info]miana_dude arrive to shoot some more of her Pimpernel film at our house, interrupted by whitney's mom calling us. but the filming finished up quick, since Rachel had a hard-working cast and crew. I made a behind-the-scenes film bit, available on Youtube. after the filming finished up, whitney and i tried to watch "Bender's Game" which we had borrowed from Matt, but his DVD was scratched, and we missed a few bits, including the ending. aiee.

whoa.. My ConDor schedule

so i just checked out the schedule of panels that I will be on for ConDor, which is a local sci-fi/fantasy convention coming up this weekend in San Diego. I'm moderating a panel with Amber Benson (she is best known for playing "Tara" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). 6 years ago, i was volunteering at Buffyfest, and was assigned to help escort some of the special guests from the back entrance to where they needed to go, and i met Amber as her guide... and we, along with two of her friends or family, got stuck in the freight elevator that wouldn't go to the floor we wanted. i wonder if she'll remember me.

and Donna and I will be chatting up star wars on saturday...

Here's my schedule:
Friday - noon - Director's Room:
The Appeal of Urban Fantasy – Amber Benson, Sue Dawe, James Floyd(M), Michael Underwood.

Saturday - 1 PM - Director's Room:
The Good, The Bad And Jar Jar Binks: What has worked in Star Wars and what hasn’t – Sue Dawe, James Floyd, Donna Keeley, Pat Sallume, Janni Lee Simner(M).

Sunday - 11 AM - Director's Room:
Battlestar Galactica: The developing relationship between humans and cylons – James Floyd, Dani Kollin, Tara Oakes(M), Dave Rankin, Janet Tait.

One panel a day - that's easy. but wait... there's more...
Dan and I will be running the scavenger hunt on Saturday: "The Greatest ConDorian Hero" - it's a little different than events we've done in the past at ConDor - for starters, it's not a race. it's designed so that people can play for a little while, then go to a panel, then come back and play some more, etc. -- no need to block out time to do it, you can do it in between panels and such. hopefully we'll get more participants this way.

More about ConDor

Looks like i'm going to have to prepare some notes on Urban Fantasy.

I has a Clone Wars review...

Read my awesome summary of last Friday's episodes: "Blue Shadow Virus" and "Mystery of a Thousand Moons" on ClubJade.net. Respond on how awesome it is (either here or on the site).

but seriously, leave comments on whether you liked my review or not - this is my first time writing a review (for posting not on this blog), so let me know what you think. Too much summary? not enough opinion? spoiled the plot? not funny enough? needs more cowbell? if you saw the episode pair, was it accurate, if you didn't see them, did it tell the story enough?

busy week.

so this past week has been full of seeing different friends and family.

- got to hang out and play games with Charlene & Roland, including the new trivia PS2 game that my sister and Darren got us for christmas.
- Tamas & Eleanor came to town with Emese (she's so big now!) and cooked up dinner last sunday for us and Justin and Alex. plus got to hang out with [info]miana_dude for a little while that afternoon.
- seeing lots of rarely-seen relatives for grandma's funeral, including several whom i'm not sure i had ever met before (but grandma had told us about)
- new year's eve with marisa and monica and patrick and john. and yay for using a nearly-expired oil change free coupon and getting my headlight fixed free while we went shopping.
- new year's day with a few folk from the San Diego Fan Force for our all day Star Wars movie marathon - we tried to get through all 6 movies, but having a marathon the day after new year's eve was a bit tiring...
- and finally yesterday, running some errands with whitney, and then helping justin tear down a separate shed/awning thing next to his house that had a little termite rot. we used the ol' Goblin Digging Stick from the great Booboo Garage demolition job from several years back, and justin's chain saw. and then dinner from Mimi's.
- we also bought a few cheap video games on the day after christmas, and realized on new year's eve that one disc would glitch in the same spot after several attempts - and got it finally exchanged yesterday. and got some nice shiny new video games for christmas. The Force Unleashed and LEGO Indiana Jones!! woohoo!

watching The Clone Wars

i've been enjoying watching "The Clone Wars" - the new Star Wars animated series that's been on cartoon network. most of the stories have been enjoyable and entertaining but a few things are holding it back from being truly great...

1. Knowing the outcome - we have most of the principle characters and sides, and since we know how the war ends, and who survives until Episode III, some of the sense of real danger is a bit alleviated. So-and-so isn't going to die because they have to be in Episode III, or in the case of newly-developed characters, should survive at least until the second season, which is already in production, etc.
Which is why the clone-centered episode "Rookies" might have felt stronger because the outcome was not known for any of the characters involved - in short a blank slate for storytelling.

2. Paving over existing continuity. a lot of work was put into previous Clone Wars era continuity of stories (novels, comics, the Genndy Tartakovsky animated series, games, etc.). That timeframe was fairly fleshed out during the time between the release of Ep II and Ep III, but with quite a few holes in it still for future stories. rather than simply fill in those holes, the new series has mushed some things around a bit - most notably when Anakin becomes Knighted (very early in the war, instead of late in the war - so that they can give him a padawan), and when Grievous makes his appearance (now much earlier in the war, and he's coughing from the beginning). while i think there is always wiggle room possible with continuity if it leads to better stories, i think it just ends up confusing a bit to use some of the existing Clone Wars era and then disregard other parts of it... but perhaps they really aren't using much of any of the previous Clone Wars continuity, other than re-using some characters like Asajj.

3. Outcomes. so far it seems that pretty much after each story or story arc, the heroes win and the villains are thwarted and run off and escape. Grievous, supposedly a great leader for the separatists, keeps getting defeated, and escapes like a mustache-twirling villain while his giant spaceship of the week gets destroyed. Asajj gets humbled and threatened for her failures - although she actually gets a mission done from time to time (like rescuing Nute Gunray). for the Sith to seem menacing and not tolerate failure, they have a few top minions who fail quite regularly, mostly because of our Jedi heroes. Grievous is also routinely undone by the stupidity of the battle droids. of course, part of this is set by #1 - most of these main characters in the war have to survive.

4. Reducing the menace factor. Grievous has some bodyguard magna-droids who in Episode III, do a decent job of holding off Anakin and Obi-wan, two of the best lightsaber and combat-trained Jedi. yet it now appears that less experience Jedi can cut them down with ease (Nahdar in the most recent episode) - perhaps later models get better programming and armor? same thing with Grievous -- great killer of Jedi (bye Nahdar!), yet Ahsoka the padawan has fought him and survived... and while Obi-wan had been surprised to find Grievous able to wield 4 lightsabers at once in Episode III... didn't Kit Fisto mention this to the Jedi after he fought Grievous?

Overall, i've been entertained and have been enjoying the series. i just feel a need to nitpick.

raining... and the weekend.

it's raining.
which means....
a day off from working on the back deck.

so the past few days of last week, i started getting my parents' redwood deck ready to apply water sealant - using a cleaner to help clear off several years' worth of algae, and removing a few boards that had rotten and getting new boards to replace them... that took a few days, and so i left the weekend for the deck to dry (after the scrubbing).

and now it is raining. which means i'm just a few days too late to apply the water sealant :P

hopefully it will rain enough though to continue to rinse off the deck from all the crub i scrubbed off - after some scrubbing and drying, the deck changed colors... either from me removing crud... or just the crud being pulverized and evenly coating the deck. so hopefully, it will be cleaner.

---
meanwhile, what else was i up to last week?
first part of the week - the Killian's were in town, and after they stayed with us, they checked into their resort hotel where Chip's conference was held. i got to hang out with Kristina on Tuesday, giving her a ride to lunch at her old job, and then we played croquet and mini-golf at her resort (they have a real grass putting mini golf course, which i am now a fan of).

wednesday i started working on the deck, removing the rotten boards and buying replacement boards and some cleaner, and then started cleaning. also had lunch with Monica and her kids. thursday, continued cleaning the deck, and went to a YAG planning session. Friday, kept working on the deck, including the uprights around the glass on the canyonside, with help from Darren, then went to Kary's tree trimming party, where we met up with some people who remembered me as a kid in the 80s and had a great time.

Saturday.. only a small amount of time cleaning the deck... but mostly getting ready for Dan and Debby's annual Geekmas party. way too much food at this feast of a potluck.. yay to google spreadsheets for keeping us organized. ham! lamb! yam! stuffing! pink stuff! candied bacon! appetizers! mashed potato! green bean casserole! homemade root beer! risotto! wings!
then we played some games of catchphrase, modified versions of backseat drawing, and apples to apples.

Sunday, we slept in and felt lazy. i ended up reading the new Star Wars novel "The Clone Wars: Wild Space" in bed for a chunk of the day, finishing it around 2 pm. first Star Wars novel to come out in trade-size. now i need a new bookshelf :P it was a good read, tying into the new animated series a bit, but mostly focusing on an adventure with Obi-wan Kenobi and Senator Bail Organa. then watching whitney play her game of Civ, then off to church... and out for

the San Diego Fan Force holiday party. lots of fun with my fan force friends, and the ever wacky White Bantha gift exchange. i chose to steal this year - stealing a cool galactic heroes skiff set, but it got stolen from me, and i ended up stealing some DVDs from a little girl (but to be fair, these movies were not age-appropriate for her.. she chose to open a random gift which had "The Shining", "Road Warrior", "Blade Runner" and "2001"... i ended up trading The Shining and Road Warrior to Dan who had gotten some other DVDs... so i ended up with his "Little Mermaid 2-disc special edition". and it was Emily's birthday!

so yeah.. 3 holiday parties in a row.
now to get some Christmas shopping done.

busy weekend.

1. friday night: YAG Wine & Cheese, with a presentation on Climate Change & Catholic Social Teaching. i whip up some grilled pears to bring.

2. saturday:
2A) paintball outing, organized by [info]sirrogue. i shoot dan in the chest. i shoot wayne in his pocket of spare paintballs. i get shot in the neck. and the head. however, i am not that bruised. whitney's got some nice welts from taking shots in the shoulder and thigh.
2B) San Diego Fan Force meeting at Belmont Park. good turnout - we have a quick meeting, then play some black light mini-golf and ride the Giant Dipper roller coaster.
2C) dinner at Marisa's - yum! we discuss the pH of artichoke water, for old time's sake.

3. sunday:
3A) sleep in, from soreness of paintball.
3B) late lunch with Warren and Claire
3C) church
3D) install the old Tivo at my parents - sure their TV reception is really sucky, but now they can boo-bip their way to happier viewing.
3E) upload the Rocket Race results and links and clues and such.

time for sleep.

weekend fun... and sunday/monday work

so saturday, we went up to the Long Beach / Los Alamitos area for Jon & Cathy's wedding. it turned out be a big reunion of folk who were in the young adult (grad student/young working professional) age group in our church from the late 90s and early 00s. friends showed up from all over the country, often with their kids.. Tamas & Eleanor (and Emese) came down from Seattle, Karen from the eastern regions of Washington state, Danielle came out with her daughter from DC, Roummel from North Carolina, bunch of folks who are now in the bay area (the Pangs, Binh, Paul and Jeanette, and of course those who stuck around in san diego, etc. we carpooled up with martha, which was a great way to catch up with her. before martha came, we did some last minute online shopping for a gift. as we got close to the church, we stopped for lunch at Mels Drive-in Diner in Seal Beach and marveled at the numerous typos in the menu (Chaddar cheese, anyone?) and wondered when the tabletop jukebox would eventually play the song we had picked (on Martha's quarter).

Fr. Peter presided over the ceremony, which was lovely. it was held at Saint Hedwig's (not Saint Hagrid's) in Los Alamitos.

after hanging out with the 'light refreshment', whitney and i went over to visit my Grandma, who was in the hospital in Long Beach. she was supposed to be released soon, and she was really surprised to see us (especially all dressed up). we hung out with her for a half hour, letting her tell us some stories of her moving to california.

we then went up to Cerritos for the reception at a chinese seafood restaurant. they had the whole mega-course dinner - duck, shrimp/scallop balls, abalone and veggies, shark fin's soup, lobster, steamed fish, chicken and veggies, giant zhong with fried rice inside, etc. we had a great time visiting with friends, and playing with the kids, but had to leave early (i had to be at work at 7 am on sunday). so we missed the cake and the dancing (Ian was doing the DJ duties!) :(
as we were saying our goodbyes, whitney nearly got hit in the head with the bouquet toss that had sailed over the heads of the crowd of single women!

and then we drove home, and san diego got very foggy as we crept in and went to bed!

the class on sunday was a bit different - it was one of the larger ones we did, and my fellow trainer was out because her father had died, so we had two new trainers dropped in to help out with the class - even though we had never worked together before, and had different styles of teaching, the class went quite smoothly (except for one table of ladies in the back of class who behaved very poorly because they wanted it clear that they did not want to be in class - in the evaluations, several of the other students commented on how this group of ladies were disrespectful and not conducive to a good learning experience).

sunday afternoon was a book signing at Mysterious Galaxy. James Luceno, whose newest Star Wars novel, Millenium Falcon, just came out this past week, was in town for a signing. Patrick at the store had asked me to do the introduction, which i put together with some notes he had pointed me too.. of course, by the time of the signing, i ended up more or less making it up from everything i remembered, it was a fun talk and signing - a few members of San Diego Fan Force came out, and some of the usual SW readers came out, but overall it was rather small. after Jim talked about the making of the novel, he did a signing. after the signing, i went over to pick up whitney from church, and we went over to the Zieglers to play a new game (a farm-building game, similar to Puerto Rico), which went until midnight (eep! 7 am morning today too!)

today's class was completely different from the sunday class - it was a make-up class for people who missed their initially scheduled class. we had two pollworkers come - a mother and her teenaged son, who were both great students. it was really cool, and we covered the material quickly and less formally. halfway through class, another pollworker came, looking to just get a refresher on the touchscreen.. and when we got to the touchscreen part, we spend extra time to make sure he got extra practice.

still alive...

when you haven't worked 8 to 5 in a while, waking up to be there at 8 am slowly builds on you each day.... leaving you a bit more tired each evening. now after nearly two weeks, i actually look forward to going to bed a little earlier.

after learning most of the material last week, and getting our group formed and practicing the delivery of the 4-hour class this week, we are pretty ready for our 'dress rehearsal' tomorrow morning. more or less. my group of trainers and training assistants is pretty on top of things - we have one veteran trainer, and one veteran training assistant, and then 2 new trainers and 1 new TA, though i have extensive pollworker experience, so i am fairly comfortable with the material and what we are teaching.

last weekend was pretty busy for us - friday night, my brother flew into town as a surprise for the celebration of my dad's 60th birthday. we went to Pehoe's on Coronado, a nice seafood restaurant with a view of the bay looking back at the downtown San Diego skyline. and my sister, brother and i treated dad and mom.

saturday i was busy with Conjecture, the annual sci-fi/fantasy local con in san diego that happens in the fall. but first, an emergency errand for my dad - picking up a clip-on light for his music stand for his gig that night, since he had to go up to LA during the day to check in on my grandma, who had fallen, and gone back to the hospital. after getting the stand, i headed off to the convention. donna and i were the star wars fan meet-up. not that many SW fans at this con.. or at least that would want to come to a meetup as opposed to any of the programmed panels. in the afternoon, i went to a panel on "Why is Science still Scary?" and then got set for the panel i was moderating in the afternoon: "Sorting out the Clone Wars". my fellow panelists included Donna (from San Diego Fan Force), [info]lazypadawan, and Matt. I explained how the whole Clone Wars media franchise worked, with the new show and movie and such, then we had a discussion of what we liked and disliked, and our expectations for the new series. amazingly we managed to talk for the whole time period - 90 minutes. and i call it a success, since the # of ppl in the audience > # of ppl on panel. i think we had a great discussion and kept the audience informed and entertained.

sunday, i had the Star Wars trivia game panel to run. [info]briekalan came in her Jedi robes, Edgar came in his stormtrooper armor, and Donna returned as well, to help out in running the game. we had a small audience, but they did outnumber us, so again, a win! we gave out lots of cool prizes, thanks to Lesley and Donna, and i tried out a new game format that works well with small audiences. and one of the guests decided to join the club!!

after that, i was on panel to discuss Battlestar Galactica. this was the first time i've been on a panel with Stephen Potts, who had been a professor of mine at UCSD (in sci-fi lit). afterward, i packed up the fan force table and headed home to eat and rest.

We went to the annual Welcome Mass that our church holds on the UCSD campus (at "Stonehenge") to start off the school year. whitney sang in the choir, and i got roped into helping pass out name tags and with the grilling (which gets started during mass, so that by the time mass is finished, everyone can hop in line to get a fresh burger. though i cooked up lots of burgers (and got wheezy from smoke), i didn't get to enjoy one... whitney and i went over to my parents' house to have dinner with them and my brother and sister and darren before joseph flew back home - got some BJ's pizza.

no rest on the weekend. not much rest during the week. need rest.

oh and... The Office started up again last week or so.. maybe the week before. Oh, what a tangled web we weave, Angela. and another tangled web is being woven on Mad Men.

last weekend

last weekend, this happened:

San Diego Fan Force meeting at In'N'Out, followed by laser tag at Ultrazone with some of the San Diego Browncoats. yay for joint events and getting the headcount about right. in the first game, i was the top scorer for my team. in the second round, the browncoat group got the blue gear -- "2 by 2, guns of blue"? i was afraid that if not enough people showed up, i'd get stuck with a reservation deposit. and i've been nominated for president! maybe i'll even get elected president.. hehe

Saturday night we had Diana and Grant over for impromptu games - tried out some of the games we got at GenCon - aBridged (a simplified game of Bridge), and Backseat Drawing.

Sunday, after church, Booboo and Mom came over to watch the closing ceremony of the Olympics on our TV. unfortunately our NBC reception was kinda sketchy to start with.. it seemed like there was some static interference which made most of the volleyball final tough to watch, but then it cleared up, making the last game of volleyball easier to watch (and it was a great match to watch), and most of the closing ceremony was static free -- until the athletes came out, and Yao Ming's image apparently caused the static to return.. grr.. Booboo was really into tracking the Olympics, and watching the sports. apparently at her apartment up in Sunnyvale, she's got a 32 inch TV and cable (for chinese channels), and was disappointed when she came down to stay with my folks with their tiny TV and lack of decent reception. so she was glad to come over to watch on our TV. Booboo's favorite event: synchronized swimming.

back from Chicago and Indy

so Whitney and I returned yesterday from a little week-plus vacation to the Midwest: Chicago to visit her folks, and going around the town a bit with Chip and Kristina, and seeing their new digs at Purdue, and then Gencon/Jadecon in Indianapolis.

I also managed to mess up my shoulder, probably during a little Sithball on friday.

and we have returned with a bunch of games. =)
the constant theme of the vacation was staying up late, sleeping in, and alcohol.

here's the real quick recap:

Saturday: arrived at Midway, the red line which normally goes up to Whitney's parents' house is temporarily rerouted, and so we end up walking a bit farther on the streets with our luggage. dinner at an italian restaurant that gets gusty in their courtyard. play some mah jong. buy a large flat of blueberries.

Sunday: walk around Lincoln Park Zoo (yay for monkeys!), figure out how to play Mario Kart on the Wii, watch some olympics, i do a little demolition work on their back tool shed, starting to remove the roof, have a barbecue (using my pollo asado recipe)

Monday: go to the Chicago History Museum with Whitney's mom, then whitney and i have dinner on our own at Five Faces (gyros!) and wander down to water tower place and then find a movie theater to watch "The Dark Knight" -- hey look, it was filmed in Chicago!

Tuesday: MarioKart until [info]ckillian and [info]kmkillian arrive in town, and then the four of us head off to the Museum of Science and Industry, where we see the new digs for U-505, and learn about petroleum, farming, automated manufacturing, and the fairy castle! then we have a fun parking adventure on Lasalle Avenue and go over to have dinner with whitney's parents in old town, before heading off to Second City for some comedy and drinks.

Wednesday: we walk down the lakefront to Water Tower Place, and then take a trolley to the Art Institute of Chicago which is going through some renovations and so chunks of the collection are not available. and they secretly swapped out whitney's favorite painting and replaced it with something else. but the giraffe mosaic was still there. after a late lunch of deep dish pizza, we pack up and drive with the Killian's back to West Lafayette, Indiana, and get the quick tour of their house (with paper wasps!), the towns (and a late dinner at a Sonic (San Diego has none, yet we get bombarded by their TV ads on cable) and some games.

Thursday: Kristina takes us to Indianapolis to go to Trader Joes, and take us to GenCon. we get to the hotel, and dump our bags at the suite, get our badges and loot bags, and try out some games (like the upcoming Battlestar Galactica board game). we get into the Star Trek CCG new expansion pre-release tournament, where i go 2-1 before i drop out to go join the Club Jade game night (whitney has already left with [info]sirrogue after the first game). Dan had set up a Star-Wars-ized version of telephone pictionary which had everyone cracking up. Gamorreans are better than squid dogs! then back at the suite for some hanging out, and whitney and i teach Ingenious to some other Jaders. and then we go see a midnight showing of "The Clone Wars"

Friday: i listen in on a session with the Emperor talking about writing: point of view, emotion, etc. then head out on the con floor to demo more games. then the jadecon picnic and games, where i ran like a burning wookiee, and pitched a star destroyer. some project runway presentations, a pinata, some smores and sparklers, and back to the suite for more craziness and watching olympics, and also watching [info]evilbearhunter babysit [info]snarkel.

Saturday: start in Rogue's SW RPG session, though duck out to meet up with [info]jedidajuan and Doug out on the floor. whitney later joins us, right about the time of the moment of silence for Gary Gygax. Dajuan thought she could blast through the segway challenge but gets eliminated for going too slow! whitney and i go out to meet up with her brother matt, and his girlfriend hannah, who are road-tripping through Indy on the way home from an interview in Texas. then back to the suite for [info]hollywdliz's wine tasting session. unfortunately one of our two bottles of malbec ended up being bad.. boo! then i got roped into building a volcano as a decoration for the big party. james does crafts. really. the big club jade party saturday night with filking, food, an anakin fireball, avoiding the phelps-watchers, and some other crazy stuff. though my shoulder was starting to pain up some more. later on, we started playing this new game we got (Backseat Drawing) out in the hall with bunches o' people. it looks to be a hit! since we had a slightly early flight the next day, we said some goodbyeses.

Sunday, a little breakfast with the early risers (or midmorning risers), and then off to the airport, where we learn that the dirt cheap card game we bought that is for 2-5 players is technically playable with 2 players and 2 dummy hands. flight through phoenix without having to change planes. i actually doze off a little on the plane. but mostly keep reading "Spin State". get home, do a little grocery shopping and sack out. shoulder pain and maybe a slight fever. get up in order to readjust to the time zone and watch the assorted Venture Bros, and The Office stored on the tivo, and one Western Tradition, which puts whitney to sleep.

"The Clone Wars" review: Feel, don't think.

since fandango asked my opinion of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", here it is:

"The Clone Wars" was exciting and fun, so long as you don't think too hard about plausibility within the Star Wars universe (would a padawan really behave with such sass toward her master? would one of the galaxy's biggest crime lords really take the words of Obi-wan or Dooku at face value?). It's an action filled ride that presumes a little audience familiarity with the Star Wars galaxy. While full of bloodless battle scenes, there is light-heartedness with droid humor. While the kids and casual fans might enjoy it most, nitpicking fans will find a lot to pick apart. With little space action, the movie doesn't quite reach the epic scale associated with Star Wars films, but as a lead-in to the TV series, it works fine. Also, stick around to the end of the credits.

and now a few nitpicks that Whitney and I came up with:
* While tween-aged girls in America might treat their adults with sass, is it realistic for Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi Temple-raised (presumably?) youngling-now-padawan to give some lip to Anakin and Obi-wan? She wants to prove that she's not a kid, but acting disrespectful to her masters seems out of place with what we've seen with other younglings who are generally acting meek and humble in front of their elders.
* Jabba appears to believe Dooku's word (and evidence) without proof, (or even Obi-wan's word). You don't get to be a major crime lord by trusting anyone with an agenda who comes to you with "proof" of things without examining it yourself. Sure, the Jedi are supposedly trustworthy, but even a Hutt knows that when Jedi are fighting Jedi for your favor, they might be lying.
* Relative abilities of the fighting forces - both in the opening battles, and the main battles, the elite clonetroopers don't feel very elite - they mostly get plastered by the battle droids, and the Jedi do most of the work (to make the Jedi the real heroes, obviously). it seems that very few droids are actually killed by the clones, yet the droids are shown to be not terribly competent (or at least the droid commanders are not, judging by the battle droid humor). so this puts the clones at being even less competent (of course, there is the issue of numbers...)
* in Revenge of the Sith, Grievous' magnaguard droids are shown to be quite a formidable challenge for two of the best fighters among the Jedi, yet here, three are taken down by a noob with a baby on her back. perhaps the ones in ROTS are better programmed?
